November In The Garden

Lawn care:
Summer into fall lawn care is more than just watering; good fertilization is also important. With the continuing heat the best advice is to fertilize with Dr. Earth Super Natural Lawn Fertilizer more often, using less fertilizer. This will keep the lawn from running out of nutrients during the last heat of early fall into winter cold. Make the last mowing a bit shorter than previous mowing, just in case we get a snow load.

Featured Plant for fall into winter color and texture
Grasses are a great way to have fall into winter interest. With the large variety of hardy grasses that will do well with a reasonable amount of water and work. For the best results, water consistently the first season, getting the plant established, then the plant can handle a bit less water. Great grasses for our area are Karl Forester, Pampas, Yaku Jima, and Maiden Grass to name a few. This is the prime time for this plant, and they will add winter interest to any garden. The best time to prune is early spring, the middle of March; you want to make sure to prune them back before you see new growth.

*Helpful Hints for the center dieback of mature grasses. This is easy, cut out the center of the grass with a shovel, or a worn out saw, fill the area with soil and the grass will naturally fill back in.

Garden Shop Nursery Product Pick for Fall Gardening!

We still have many weeks before the ground is frozen and mulching would become a waste. Now is a great time to top dress those trees and shrubs that are newly planted, or you just want to ensure the root system has energy to put on new roots over the winter. Just because the tree has lost their leaves does not mean they are not active; quite the contrary. Winter is the time when trees put on more roots in turn the tree can grow in the spring and summer months. Whether you use Master Nursery’s Black Forest, or Bumper Crop you will not only help with nutrients, but it will also help from moisture loss.

Two great products for fall mulching are, Bumper Crop and Black Forest. They have a lot of the same ingredients in them. Some like Black Forest because it is a heavier product.
