Hamamelis
Witch-hazel

Witch-hazel can easily reach a height of only 8 to 15 feet. The crooked stem and long forking branches have a smooth, brown bark making it an interesting shrub in the winter months. The leaves are from 3 to 5 inches long, thick, and borne on short stalks. An interesting feature of the plant is the lateness of the threadlike, yellow flowers, which will appear in our area sometime in January or February. The seed capsule does not mature until the following season, when it bursts open, scattering the shining black, hard seeds with great force and to a considerable distance.

Chaenomeles speciosa Flowering Quince

Flowering Quince is a large fast growing shrub that provides showy flowers of red, orange, white, and pink depending on the cultivar. We will enjoy these blooms in the early spring in our region before the plant has produced leaves. This plant will produce thorns, some careful placement is important. They will produce an apple-like fruit that can be used to make jellies.

Viburnum trilobum

Viburnum opulus

Viburnums are some of the most attractive and versatile shrubs that are suited for our region. They can be used as hedges or screens as well as in mixed perennial/shrub borders. A great feature is that can be used as a stand alone plant. They usually take the form of shrubs, but some species can become spectacular small ornamental trees. They range in size from the Dwarf American Cranberry bush at 2 feet tall by 2 feet wide, to 6 to 8 feet in size.

One of the most interesting and special features is that Viburnums are plants with four seasons of interest. They have profuse white and pink flowers in the spring, then producing textured leaves. Once the plant has reached maturity it will produce berries, an important food source for birds. Viburnums provide beautiful fall colors, lending toe dramatic branching structure in the winter.
