Witch-hazel
Witch-hazel can easily reach a height of only 8 to 15
feet. The crooked stem and long forking branches have a smooth, brown bark
making it an interesting shrub in the winter months. The leaves are from 3
to 5 inches long, thick, and borne on short stalks. An interesting feature
of the plant is the lateness of the threadlike, yellow flowers, which will
appear in our area sometime in January or February. The seed capsule does
not mature until the following season, when it bursts open, scattering the
shining black, hard seeds with great force and to a considerable distance.

Flowering Quince

Flowering Quince is a large fast growing shrub that provides showy flowers
of red, orange, white, and pink depending on the cultivar. We will enjoy
these blooms in the early spring in our region before the plant has
produced leaves. This plant will produce thorns, some careful placement is
important. They will produce an apple-like fruit that can be used to make
jellies.
