July/August
Heat And Your Garden
With the impending heat, good watering and feeding practices
are very important for the health of your plants. Remember,
the more healthy your plants are, the fewer problems
you will have with drought stress, pests and disease.
- Lawns
being a cool season plant will have the tendency to
fade, and slow growth when the days get above 90º
day after day, this is there normal behavior. Continuing
your normal watering, with some hand watering in between
will be fine. Fertilize more often, using less fertilizer
will also help. Once the temperatures cool, and the
days get shorter your lawn will green up again.
- Trees/shrubs
may also need a bit more water with the heat; again
hand watering between your cycles will help with drought
stress. It does not have to be a lot of water, just
enough to get the plant through the dry period. If
you have not fertilized, a good organic blend in a
small dose will help the plant by feeding the roots,
in turn the plant uses the water to the best advantage.
Pruning off any dead, diseased or rubbing branches
is also recommended.
- Perennials,
annuals and your containers. You will see that your
containers will need more water than your planted
material. It is not uncommon to water containers daily;
the plant will start to droop when water is needed.
Like all other plants more feeding, in smaller doses
will help keep them healthy during the heat.
Walking
your yard and garden regularly is the best way to make
sure you plants are surviving. Act immediately to signs
of wilting, bugs or disease. Come into The Garden Shop
Nursery at Caughlin Ranch for all of your gardening needs.
We have the staff and expertise to handle any problem.
