Caring for your plants as winter approaches November and December Planting and Gardening Tips
If there is one thing that we at the Garden Shop
Nursery want our gardeners to know, is to keep up with watering, if nature
does not.Winter watering
is the most crucial chore in the winter. Deciduous plants should be
thoroughly soaked after leaf fall and a couple hard freezes. Evergreens
should be deeply watered every three to four weeks through out the winter
unless we get enough snow or rain to keep the roots from becoming dry. This
is especially important with newly planted material, whether deciduous of
evergreen. Plant material should be watered every two to three weeks, and
this should be done on a day that air temperatures are above freezing and
the ground is not frozen. Plants growing in poorly drained soils will need
less watering.
Using tender plants as house plants This may not be something that many of you want to do, but since I don't have house plants I us my zonal Geraniums as houseplants. All I do is make sure to get the plant into the garage when the night time temperatures head for the 40 degrees or cooler, then I bring into the house and make sure to give it as much sun as possible. The blooming will stop, but my multi color leaf will remain as long as I make sure the plant gets direct sun.
